Did You Know?: Donyale Luna, born Peggy Ann Freeman, was an American model and actress widely regarded as the country's first Black supermodel. She was featured in a 6-page story published by Harper's Bazaar magazine in April 1965, at a time when Jim Crow laws had just been overturned by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was unimaginable at the time for a Black model to appear in any magazine other than Ebony or Jet. Many whites were upset that she was appearing in major media, and the pressure finally led to Donyale leaving to England, where racism and prejudice were less prevalent. Donyale made history in May 1966 when she became the first African American woman to appear on the cover of Vogue's British edition.
