Did You Know?: Robert H. Lawrence Jr. was the first black man to receive astronaut training. Lawrence became a test pilot for the MOL after entering the Air Force (Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program). Lawrence's contributions to this initiative established him as a forerunner in what would later become NASA's Space Shuttle Program. He flew approximately 2,500 hours during his career. NASA tells the account of Robert Lawrence and speculates that Lawrence may have flown one of the early Space Shuttle missions.
