In 1958, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (@alvinailey) was created, forever changing the perception of American dance. The theater grew out of a now-famous “Blue Suite” performance, led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African American modern dancers at New York City's 92nd Street Y in March of the same year.
