Did You Know?: Cicely Tyson, a two-time Emmy winner, achieved unprecedented success in film roles as strong African-American female characters. Tyson began her film career in 1957 and her career spanned six decades, setting a precedent for serious Black actors by refusing to play roles that belittled Black people. She received an honorary Oscar at the age of 93 and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Television Hall of Fame in 2020. In addition, she received a Peabody Award for lifetime achievement in 2020.
