Did You Know?: The most reliable stories about the invention of the potato chip revolve around George Crum, a famous Black chef in the nineteenth century who served the wealthiest Americans and eventually opened his own wildly successful restaurant. Nobody knows for sure how the potato chip was invented; some say it was Crum's sister, who worked at the same restaurant. Crum's experimentation, in any case, resulted in the refinement and popularization of chips, which became a local and, eventually, a regional draw from all over New England.
