As it celebrates its 22nd year as an Atlanta staple, let's explore the history of this now beloved skating hot spot.
While Atlanta natives may be able to spot their local coffee shop in the background of a Marvel movie, no city landmark is more recognizable than the Cascade Family Skating rink featured in the movie ATL. If you can remember, Cascade was the epicenter of drama, especially for characters Rashad played by T.I and New New played Lauren London. Founded by New York native Greg Alexander, what was once the site of Golden Glide was converted into Cascade Family Skating in the year 1999 and opened its doors in 2000.
Skating culture is a staple of the Black Community and Black Atlanta and has a style all its own. Originating from the Jelly Bean Skating Rink in southwest Atlanta, "crew-skating", which is the team style of skating, is uniform with a touch of flair and all set the backdrop of ATL-based rap and R&G. Shortly after its opening, Cascade gained recognition as the host of many celebrity birthday parties for artists like P-Diddy, Beyonce and hosted 21 Savage's birthday in 2019. To this day it this Southwest Atlanta gem has remained a regular outing for families and friends alike, transporting its patrons back to the "dirty south "of the early 2000s. Therefore, we have deemed Cascade Family Skating an OBO treasure and Black Landmark.
